Business water standing charges

Think of the standing charge as a fee for being connected to the water network. This is similar to the energy standing charge you'll pay.

A standing charge is a fixed fee applied to your account regardless of how much water your business actually uses. Even if you shut down your premises for a month and use absolutely no water, you will still be billed for the standing charge.

What does the standing charge cover?

Infrastructure Maintenance: The upkeep of the massive network of pipes, reservoirs, and pumping stations that deliver water to your door.

Meter Maintenance: The cost of reading, maintaining, and eventually replacing your business's water meter.

Customer Service & Billing: The administrative costs of managing your account, generating bills, and providing customer support.

How is it calculated?

Standing charges are usually calculated based on the physical size of your water meter (measured in millimetres, such as a 15mm, 20mm, or 50mm meter). A standard office will have a small meter and a lower standing charge. In comparison, a manufacturing plant requiring high water pressure will have a larger meter and a significantly higher fixed charge.

Volumetric charges

While the standing charge is fixed, the volumetric charge is entirely in your control. This is the variable cost based on the exact amount of water your business consumes.

What does the volumetric charge cover?

Water Supply: The actual cost of extracting, treating, and supplying clean, safe water to your taps.

Wastewater/Sewerage: For almost every cubic meter of water you draw from the tap, it is assumed a portion goes back down the drain. You are charged volumetrically for the removal and treatment of this dirty water.

How is it calculated?

Volumetric charges are billed in pence per cubic meter. One cubic meter equals 1,000 litres of water. Your supplier takes a meter reading (or an estimate, if a reading isn't provided) to see how many cubic meters you've used in the billing period, and multiplies that by your agreed tariff rate. These charges are all built into your bill by your retailers like Everflow and WaterPlus

The Return to Sewer Allowance: Most water companies assume that about 90% to 95% of the water you use goes back into the sewer system (the rest is consumed, evaporated, or used in products).

Therefore, your wastewater volumetric charge is usually calculated at 90-95% of your fresh water usage. If your business uses water in its products (like a brewery or a bakery), you can apply to have this allowance adjusted so you aren't paying wastewater charges on water that never enters the sewer!

Surface water and highway drainage

Alongside your standard fixed and variable costs, you will likely see a charge for drainage.

Surface Water Drainage: This covers the cost of rainwater that falls onto your property (roofs, private parking lots) and drains into the public sewer.

Highway Drainage: A mandatory contribution to the cost of draining public roads and pavements.

If rainwater on your property drains into a private soakaway, river, or local watercourse rather than the public sewer, you can apply to have the Surface Water Drainage charge removed from your bill, resulting in instant savings.

How to Take Control of Your Water Costs

Understanding the split between fixed and variable charges empowers you to lower your bills:

Check your meter size: If your business has downsized or changed its operations, you might be paying a high standing charge for a large meter you no longer need. Downsizing your meter can instantly reduce your fixed costs.

Audit your volumetric usage: Sudden spikes in your volumetric charges without a change in business activity are the number one indicator of a hidden leak.

Compare the market: The business water market is deregulated in many regions (including England and Scotland). If your current supplier’s standing charges or volumetric tariffs are too high, you have the right to shop around and switch to a more competitive retailer.

When you move to a new retailer, it is only the billing and customer service that changes. Your pipes and supply are still managed by the wholesaler in your area. This means prices can be different in Yorkshire in comparison to Brighton

  • How do I use the business water bill estimator?

Simply adjust the sliders or type your numbers directly into the input boxes to match your current water rates and usage. As you adjust the figures, the calculator will automatically update your estimated monthly and annual totals. The visual bar chart will also shift to show you exactly what percentage of your budget is being swallowed by fixed standing charges versus variable usage costs.

  • Where can I find the correct figures to put into the calculator?

The most accurate way to use this tool is to grab your most recent business water invoice. You will easily find these specific numbers itemized on the back or second page of your bill:

    • Total Volume/Consumption: Usually listed in cubic meters ().

    • Standing Charge / Fixed Charge: Listed as a flat fee (make sure to multiply by 12 if you are looking at a monthly bill, as the calculator asks for the annual charge).

    • Volumetric Rate: The pence or pound rate per for both fresh water and sewerage.

  • What is a normal "monthly water usage" to enter?

If you don't have a bill handy, you can use these rough industry benchmarks to estimate your usage:

    • Small Office (1-10 employees): 10 to 20 per month.

    • Medium Business / Retail (10-50 employees): 30 to 80 per month.

    • High Usage (Cafes, salons, small manufacturing): 100 to 300+ per month.

  • What are the average market rates for Water Supply and Wastewater?

If you are currently out of contract or want to benchmark your current deal against the market average, use these figures:

    • Water Supply Rate: The UK average typically sits between £1.30 and £2.00 per .

    • Wastewater Rate: Processing dirty water costs more, so expect this to be higher. The average is usually between £1.50 and £2.50 per .

  • What should I put for the "annual standing charge"?

Your standing charge is dictated by the physical size of your water meter.

    • If you operate out of a standard retail unit or office, you likely have a standard 15mm meter. Enter £50 to £150.

    • If you operate a large site, factory, or agricultural facility with a 25mm to 50mm meter, your standing charges will be significantly higher. Enter £300 to £1,000+.

  • What is the "return to sewer allowance" and should I change it?

Almost all UK water companies use a default assumption that 95% of the water you take out of the tap goes back down the drain. You should leave this slider at 95% unless you have specifically negotiated a different allowance with your supplier. Businesses that use water in their end products (such as breweries, bakeries, or commercial car washes) can apply to have this percentage lowered, which dramatically reduces their wastewater bill.

  • Why is my actual bill slightly higher than this estimate?

This calculator focuses purely on your core water and wastewater consumption. Your actual invoice will likely include a few additional regulatory line items, the most common being Surface Water Drainage (the cost of rainwater draining from your roof into public sewers) and Highway Drainage. These are usually fixed annual fees dictated by your local wholesale region.
