What Is Business Gas Price Comparison?
Business gas price comparison is a great way to save money on monthly gas bills. You simply need to know what you are currently paying, what you would like to pay, and how your business uses gas at your premises.
How Are Business Gas Prices Calculated?
Understanding Your Business Gas Bill
Looking over your business gas bill can raise several questions and one of the most common ones we come across is ‘How is the cost of business gas calculated?’
Two costs require attention when reviewing your business gas, and this makes up most of the cost of a business gas quote.
- Unit rate - this is your business gas charge. This is displayed in pence per kWh of gas used. For example, if your agreed fixed unit rate is 8.2p per kWh and you use 15,000 kWh of gas annually; you can calculate your annual business gas cost by multiplying 0.082 by 15,000 (£1,230). You will need to add additional costs to this figure. Sometimes you can be charged different unit rates depending on the time of day if you have a gas meter that allows this.
- Standing charge - a daily fee paid to your business gas supplier for the management costs of delivering the fuel to your premises. Initially, this may seem like a high number, but the costs remain unchanged regardless of how much gas you use. For example, with a standing charge of 30.2p per day, you’ll be paying £116.80 annually.
- VAT- a flat % standard rate of 20% will be applied to your business gas bill. Discounts are available for charities and non-profits who may be eligible to pay only 5%.
Business Gas Comparison For Large Consumption
Large businesses are generally those that use over 100,000 kWh of commercial gas every year. Due to this high consumption, businesses can benefit from bespoke prices as a result of bulk-buying wholesale gas.
With this in mind, comparing prices is a great idea as you can maximise your gas bill’s savings by comparing the large business gas market, and locking in the best deal.

Business Gas Prices for Small Businesses
What is considered a small business by many is viewed differently by gas suppliers. Micro business gas usage is seen as similar to the domestic market so prices are often in line with domestic costs.
According to Ofgem, a non-domestic consumer is defined as a micro business if it meets one of the following criteria:
- Employs fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent) and has an annual turnover or balance sheet no greater than €2 million (£1.7 million as of 2026, or
- Uses no more than 100,000 kWh of electricity per year, or
- Uses no more than 293,000 kWh of gas per year.
The main benefit of being defined as a micro-business rather than a small business is that you can give a termination notice at any time. Your supplier is also required to provide a renewal letter with details on how your new price differs from your previous deal.

Business Gas FAQs
-
Why is my business gas bill so high?
Common reasons include rising wholesale gas prices, being on a deemed or rollover tariff, higher seasonal usage, or a contract that is no longer competitive. Running a business gas comparison can help identify cheaper tariffs and avoid overpaying.
-
What types of business gas tariffs are available?
Businesses can choose from several gas tariff types, including fixed-rate, variable-rate, no standing charge, and deemed tariffs. Fixed-rate tariffs lock prices for 1–4 years, while variable tariffs move with the wholesale gas market.
-
What Is An MPRN Number?
An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique number used to identify your business gas supply. It allows suppliers to locate your meter and provide accurate gas quotes.
-
Should I choose a lower unit rate or a standing charge?
Businesses that use a lot of gas usually benefit from a lower unit rate, even if the standing charge is slightly higher. Businesses with low or seasonal usage may prefer a lower standing charge. Comparing both elements is the best way to find the cheapest overall tariff.
